Counterbalance Forklift Training
Anybody who utilizes a counterbalanced forklift is required to receive training, according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration policies. Training consists of a combination of classroom training and hands-on driver training. Refresher training is needed occasionally to keep driver skills up to date. OSHA does not specify a minimum time requirement for either the hands-on or classroom training.

Counterbalanced Forklifts
A counterbalanced forklift balances its cargo utilizing a counterbalance built into the truck. The blades move down and up parallel to the truck's body. The tines do not rotate. Operators driving counterbalanced lift trucks must receive training about the particular lift trucks they will be using and in a similar workplace surroundings.

Classroom Training
The lift truck operator would be taught the basics of the model of lift truck they will be utilizing in classroom training. They will learn info regarding the forklifts particular things like load, height and weight capacity. The operator would learn the basics of fueling or charging the lift truck, which depends on whether it is a gas-powered or battery-powered engine. Safety procedures pertaining to the particular forklift, like for example how to safely walk around the lift truck, will be covered.

Supervised Driving
Supervised driver training would make certain that the forklift operator knows how to utilize the counterbalanced forklift. This practical training would happen in the same type of setting wherein the operator would be working. The operator will train on the same kind of terrain with the same types of nearby buildings and other structures, as well as the same pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Refresher Training Courses
Though OSHA requires regular refresher training for counterbalanced forklift operators, there are no specifications which determine the frequency of refresher training or its contents. Then again, for regular drivers, refresher training should include classroom-style training.
