For the utilization of forklifts, there are a few health and safety guidelines governing their utilization. Forklifts are large industrial machines that could be dangerous and have to be handled with safety in mind. The regulations and rules state that the operator should perform daily inspections on the forklift and more thorough inspections on a weekly basis and on a monthly basis. The following inspections must be performed on the forklift:
Lift Truck Brakes - the brakes are a really important part of the lift truck machinery and hence they should be double and tripled checked. A brake check is carried out with different pedal heights and pressures to determine the sensitivity of the brakes. The brake lights should be checked at the same time.
The Tires - forklift tires are also key for the safe functioning of the forklift truck and to the braking system. All the tires have to be correctly inspected to make certain they are inflated to the proper pressure and that there are no punctures in the tires.
Controller - the lift truck controller system is inspected by operating the forks and the release to know that the system is in good working order. Any indication of issues must immediately reported and tended to. The lift truck should not be used until the controller system has been repaired.
Steering Wheel - the driver should check the lift truck steering wheel in order to make certain the turning of the wheel is correct. Lift truck safety depends upon the steering wheel working correctly and responding well. There are a variety of checks which can be done to determine the performance of the steering wheel.

Fire Extinguisher - all lift trucks are required to be equipped with a fire extinguisher. The extinguisher needs to be checked to ensure it will function correctly in the event of a fire. Different kinds of fire extinguisher must be inspected in specific ways. For example, a dry chemical extinguisher should be shaken.
