Caterpillar Rough Terrain Forklifts
Rough Terrain Forklift Safety
The rough terrain forklift is intended for construction sites, where supplies have to be transported around on unpaved surfaces. The correct and safe use of rough terrain forklifts is very vital to guarantee the safety of both the operator and other workers at the work location.
Even if these trucks are built for rough terrain, you still should be very careful in order prevent tip overs. The forklift is top heavy and must only be operated on level ground when lifting.
Operators of forklifts should always drive at a safe speed even though there are no Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations governing the speed restrictions of forklifts. Driving on rough or uneven terrain requires even more caution. Steering, in particular, can be dangerous at higher speeds.
When you are operating on a slope, you should keep the load on the machine's uphill side. The rule of thumb is drive up, and then back down. Never attempt to raise a load if operating on an inclined surface. The change in the center of gravity can cause the equipment to tip over.
Operators of forklifts must always wear seat belts like any driver. Check that the overhead guard is firmly in position. Depending on the working surroundings, eye and hearing protection may need to be worn. Check that a working fire extinguisher is mounted on the forklift.
The operating conditions of a forklift could be affected by weather conditions. Turning, load handling and speed may need to be adjusted to ensure safety when operating a forklift in snow, ice or rain.
